It’s Beginning to Feel a lot like Christmas!

We are now officially less than a month away until Christmas, and only 3 short weeks away from our annual holiday show, Winter Songs! We’ve been busy bees getting ready for this hectic season – but what does that mean? Here’s the inside scoop on how we prepare for Winter Songs and our holiday season:

July/August ~ hold a listening party to determine which new songs will be ordered and (hopefully) included in Winter Songs this year. Each group member is responsible for researching some new options, and then we listen to everything and vote for what we like!

September ~ start working on new Christmas tunes and decide which songs from previous years will make it into this year’s set. We’ve often got a pretty secure set list ready to work on by the end of the month. This year, we also hit the town and recorded all of the amazing videos that we’re using for our #WheresSweetScarlet contest on Facebook!

October ~ rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! We usually meet once a week, on Sunday afternoons, to start learning all the new songs, and dust off the repertoire from prior years. Closer to the end of the month, we start plotting out some new choreography, and revamping the old stuff, if needed.

November ~ finishing touches! By now, most of our new songs are memorized and it’s time to start polishing them. This is when we get really nitpicky, making sure all our vowels sound the same, our consonants end precisely together and our choreography is on point. We also hold a full-day rehearsal in a larger space to run the show from top to bottom, working out all the kinks (this happened last Sunday!).

December ~ promote and perform! We want to make sure we feel 100% comfortable on stage, so we love to get out there to perform at other events around the city. The more we can spread the word and practice our set, the better!

This year, you can find us at Friday Night Live, a week from today on December 6th at Lynn Valley United Church; at ‘Tis the Season: the Vancouver Thunderbirds Holiday Show on December 7th in Burnaby; at the Pender Harbour School of Music on December 15th; and at Not-So-Silent Nights in Gastown on December 20th.

But, of course, the highlight of the year will be WINTER SONGS on Saturday, December 21st at the Blueshore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University. We’d LOVE to see you there!!
