Member Feature: Vista | Vancouver A Cappella

The summer continues! Here in Sweet Scarlet Land, we’re continuing on with weekly Sunday rehearsals, even when our various members are off on family vacations and getaways. But to keep everyone fresh in our memories, we thought we’d pass the summer months away with some Member Feature posts! Our second feature is the vivacious Vista.

Vista Trethewey has the most important sounding day job (Appellate Adjudicator), but is the least intimidating member of Sweet Scarlet, with her friendly nature, mothering tendencies and forever a smile on her face. A crowd-stealing vocalist since the tender age of 3, Vista’s earliest singing memory is of snatching the microphone away from the MC at her first Canadian community event, and serenading the audience with a Persian nursery song.

Nowadays, Vista can be found singing those same lullabies to her son and two daughters, or belting out such 80’s faves as Total Eclipse of the Heart and Black Velvet to her eternally supportive hubby, Brenden.

Vista grew up in West Vancouver and has known other fellow Sweet Scarlet members, Katy and Laura since their days in the same classes at Irwin Park Elementary. A wonderfully positive addition to Sweet Scarlet, Vista consistently brings a sunny attitude to rehearsal and is always quick with a hug and words of encouragements when other members need them.

When asked what her favourite Sweet Scarlet song is to perform, her answer was, “Gloria. I love how all six of us mesh in that song and the result always impresses the audience. A close second for me would be Mad World because it’s the first Sweet Scarlet song I learned and it brings me back to the beginning and how excited I was to start this awesome journey that has had so many great moments in the past 7 years.”

And because she’s brimming with positivity, Vista has 3 favourite Sweet Scarlet memories: “The Silk Purse performance in December of 2012, showing our friends and family for the first time what we’d created and being both so protective of it and scared and supremely proud. Secondly, singing Three Ways to Vacuum Your House on stage at Kathaumixw after winning the Elmer Eisler award. And my more personal favourite moment is Heather rocking an only one-month-old Zoya at rehearsal on Sept 24, 2017 when we were learning Song for a Winters Night for the first time. I have this tiny video snippet of it that I cherish.”

Sweet Scarlet is a Vancouver-based a cappella vocal ensemble that specializes in a variety of music, including contemporary pop, world music, jazz and classical. They are available for live performances anywhere in the Lower Mainland.
